How long does a GP consultation take to work for influenza?

The GP may ask when fever, cough, aches, sore throat or tiredness began and whether symptoms are worsening. They may check breathing, temperature, pulse and other signs of serious illness. A clinical assessment is often enough to guide care, although testing may be considered in selected situations.

Advice may include rest, fluids and suitable symptom relief. Some people at higher risk of complications may be considered for antiviral treatment, with timing influenced by when symptoms started and their health conditions. Antibiotics do not treat influenza itself, though another infection may need separate assessment.

Follow the GP's instructions, drink regularly and rest. Use medicines only as directed, checking labels if you take more than one cold or pain product. Stay home while feverish or too unwell for normal activities, and reduce close contact with people who may be vulnerable.

Contact the practice again if symptoms are not settling, fever returns after improvement or you are unable to keep fluids down. Mention asthma, diabetes, pregnancy, immune problems or other long-term conditions when seeking advice.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, chest pain, new confusion, collapse or extreme weakness. Urgent medical advice is also needed for dehydration, worsening symptoms after initial improvement or a serious long-term condition with rapidly deteriorating flu symptoms.
