How long does a GP consultation take to work for giardiasis?

During the appointment, the GP may ask about watery or greasy diarrhoea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, tiredness, recent travel, untreated water and contact with someone who has similar symptoms. A stool sample may be requested because several infections can cause diarrhoea. If giardiasis is confirmed or strongly suspected, prescribed medicine may be offered. Loose stools and bloating can continue for a while as the gut settles, even after the infection is treated.

Drink frequent small amounts of fluid and consider oral rehydration advice from a pharmacist if diarrhoea is troublesome. Eat simple foods that you can tolerate, wash hands carefully after using the toilet, and avoid preparing food for other people while you have diarrhoea. Take any prescribed treatment exactly as directed and do not share it. If symptoms do not begin to improve after treatment, contact the GP because another test or a different explanation may need consideration.

Seek urgent medical help for severe dehydration, fainting, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain or marked weakness. Arrange prompt medical review if diarrhoea persists, returns after treatment, or affects a young child, older adult, pregnant person or someone with a weakened immune system.
