How long does a GP consultation take to work for cold sores?

The GP can examine the sore and ask about tingling, blisters, crusting, recurrence and possible triggers. Early advice may be more useful when symptoms have just begun, while a persistent or unusual sore may need a different assessment. The consultation can also cover pain relief, keeping the area clean, reducing transmission and whether prescribed treatment is suitable. Healing continues after the appointment, so the first change may be reduced discomfort rather than immediate disappearance.

Follow the recommended treatment instructions and wash your hands after touching the area. Avoid kissing, oral contact and sharing lip products, cups or towels while the sore is active. Do not pick the crust. Tell the GP if outbreaks recur often, affect the eye area or interfere with eating and drinking, because those details can change the plan.

Seek prompt care for eye pain, eye redness, light sensitivity or a sore near the eye. Arrange medical review for spreading sores, severe pain, difficulty drinking, a weakened immune system or a sore that is not healing as expected. Urgent help is appropriate if you feel seriously unwell or develop a rapidly worsening infection around the lesion.
