How long does a GP consultation take to work for chronic cough?

The GP may ask when the cough began, whether it is dry or produces mucus, and whether smoking, medicines, allergies, reflux or breathing symptoms are involved. They may listen to your chest and decide whether you need tests or another clinician. The visit can clarify the next step even when the cough itself continues afterwards.

Bring a list of medicines and note triggers, nighttime symptoms, breathlessness, fever or blood in phlegm. Follow the agreed treatment exactly and record whether the cough changes. Arrange the review suggested by your GP, particularly if the cough is not improving or a test result is pending. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, chest pain, or coughing up more than a small streak of blood. Contact a clinician promptly if the cough is worsening, you feel very unwell, or symptoms such as unexplained weight loss or persistent fever develop.

Ask what causes are being considered, whether any medicine could be contributing, which warning signs matter, and when you should expect a review. You can also ask what to do while waiting for tests and whether your work, sleep or exercise needs temporary adjustment.
