How long does genomic tumour profiling take to work for bowel cancer?

Short answer

Genomic tumour profiling for bowel cancer takes time for tissue preparation, molecular analysis and clinical interpretation before it can inform treatment choices.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the result is produced

The laboratory may use tissue from a biopsy or bowel operation after checking that it contains enough tumour material. It examines selected genes or other molecular features and sends a report to the clinical team. The report can help identify changes relevant to treatment, while some results are unclear or do not identify a useful option. The team reads it with the pathology report, stage, scan findings, bowel function, previous treatment and general health. For bowel cancer, molecular information may also help explain why a particular treatment is being considered, but the test does not replace the wider assessment.

How to prepare for the result

Ask whether stored tissue is available and whether a fresh biopsy is needed. Find out which treatment decision the test may inform and whether any results are needed before the next step. Keep a list of medicines and symptoms, and attend the results appointment even if you have read a laboratory summary. Ask the team to explain findings in plain language, including results that are uncertain or do not change treatment. Treatment may sometimes begin before profiling is complete when the clinical situation calls for it.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent advice for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, heavy bleeding, fever or sudden weakness. These symptoms can need immediate assessment and should not be managed by waiting for profiling. Follow the urgent contact instructions from your cancer team.

Questions for your doctor

Which sample will be tested, and is it adequate? What molecular findings could change my bowel cancer treatment? When will the team interpret the report? How do the results fit with my stage, pathology and current symptoms?

Questions people ask

Does genomic profiling work as a bowel cancer treatment?

No. It is a test that may provide information for selecting or discussing treatment.

What if the sample cannot be tested?

The team can explain whether another tissue sample or a different source of information is appropriate.
