How long does genomic tumour profiling take to work for bowel cancer?

The laboratory may use tissue from a biopsy or bowel operation after checking that it contains enough tumour material. It examines selected genes or other molecular features and sends a report to the clinical team. The report can help identify changes relevant to treatment, while some results are unclear or do not identify a useful option. The team reads it with the pathology report, stage, scan findings, bowel function, previous treatment and general health. For bowel cancer, molecular information may also help explain why a particular treatment is being considered, but the test does not replace the wider assessment.

Ask whether stored tissue is available and whether a fresh biopsy is needed. Find out which treatment decision the test may inform and whether any results are needed before the next step. Keep a list of medicines and symptoms, and attend the results appointment even if you have read a laboratory summary. Ask the team to explain findings in plain language, including results that are uncertain or do not change treatment. Treatment may sometimes begin before profiling is complete when the clinical situation calls for it.

Seek urgent advice for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, heavy bleeding, fever or sudden weakness.
