How long does genomic tumour profiling take to work for cancer of unknown primary?

Cancer of unknown primary means the tumour has been found but its original site has not yet been identified. The team checks whether the biopsy contains enough usable tumour material, then analyses selected molecular features. A report may suggest a tissue of origin, identify a change that could be relevant to treatment, or provide no clear actionable finding. It cannot replace imaging, microscopy or the clinical examination. The oncology team combines the report with where the cancer has spread, its appearance under the microscope, symptoms and your overall health. A result is therefore information for a treatment plan, not an instant diagnosis of the primary site.

Ask whether the original biopsy is suitable and whether another sample would add useful information. Check what the test is intended to clarify: the likely origin, a molecular treatment target or both. Keep a record of scans, pathology reports and medicines, and tell the team about any new symptoms. Ask whether treatment decisions need to start before profiling returns. When the report is ready, ask which findings are definite, which are possibilities and how each one affects the proposed plan.

Get prompt medical help for sudden breathlessness, severe or rapidly increasing pain, new weakness, confusion, persistent vomiting or a high temperature during cancer care. These symptoms require assessment and should not be attributed to the wait for profiling. Use your oncology team's urgent contact route when one has been provided.
