How long does fracture fixation surgery take to work for slipped capital femoral epiphysis?

Short answer

Fixation stabilises slipped capital femoral epiphysis during surgery, while walking recovery and return to activities develop over several weeks to months.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Both hip symptoms and fixation are reviewed

What the operation achieves

SCFE involves movement at the hip growth plate. A screw or similar device holds the head of the thigh bone in position and aims to prevent further slipping. The operation does not instantly restore normal strength or movement. Hip soreness, guarded walking and limited weight-bearing may continue while the tissues settle. The team may also assess the other hip because growth-plate problems can involve both sides. Follow-up checks focus on pain, hip movement, screw position and signs of healing.

Steps after fixation

Use crutches or another aid exactly as instructed and keep weight off the operated leg when told. Avoid running, jumping, climbing and twisting until the surgeon changes the plan. Take prescribed pain relief, keep the wound clean, and complete the scheduled reviews. Physiotherapy can help restore hip motion and walking control once protection is sufficient. Report any new groin, thigh or knee pain rather than increasing activity to test the hip.

When urgent advice is needed

Get prompt medical help for rapidly increasing hip pain, a new inability to stand or move the leg, fever, wound drainage, spreading redness, or marked calf swelling. Chest pain or sudden breathlessness is an emergency. New pain in the other hip, thigh or knee should be reported quickly because it may need assessment rather than home observation.

Questions to take along

Ask how much weight is allowed, when crutches can be reduced, and which movements place stress on the hip. Clarify the follow-up imaging schedule, signs of healing, plans for the other hip, and the criteria for school, work, driving and sport.

Questions people ask

Will fixation make walking normal immediately?

No. The hip is stabilised during surgery, but protected walking and rehabilitation are usually needed before normal activity.

Why should new pain in the other hip be reported?

SCFE can affect the other side, so new hip, thigh or knee symptoms deserve timely clinical assessment.
