Short answer
Fatigue after COVID-19 often improves gradually, but it can last for weeks or longer and may fluctuate from day to day.

How long can fatigue last after COVID?
Some people notice that ordinary tasks feel unusually draining, or that tiredness returns after activity. Recovery is not always a straight line: sleep, stress, infection symptoms and doing too much on a better day can all affect how you feel.
What ongoing fatigue can mean
Post-viral fatigue can affect concentration, movement and stamina as well as energy. Feeling worse after physical or mental effort may be a sign that your current level of activity is too demanding. Keep a simple record of sleep, activity and symptoms so you can describe the pattern.
Persistent tiredness can also have other causes, such as anaemia, dehydration, burnout, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease or another health problem. A clinician can review your symptoms and decide whether examination or blood tests would help.
How to support recovery
Use pacing: break tasks into smaller parts, alternate activity with rest, and increase effort only when your symptoms remain settled. Avoid trying to catch up on everything during a brief improvement, because a delayed flare of fatigue can follow.
Keep regular sleep and waking times, drink enough fluid for your needs, eat regular nourishing meals, and choose gentle movement if it does not worsen symptoms. Return to work, study or exercise in manageable stages, discussing adjustments with a clinician when necessary.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical review if fatigue is not gradually easing, is interfering with daily activities, or is accompanied by weight change, persistent fever, unusual bleeding, marked thirst, swelling or changes in urination. Mention medicines, sleep problems and any earlier medical conditions.
Seek urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, new chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or sudden weakness. These symptoms need prompt assessment rather than being attributed to recovery from COVID-19.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Does my pattern fit post-COVID fatigue? Could another condition be contributing? Which activities are appropriate now? Do I need tests or a structured recovery plan?

Questions people ask
Why does fatigue return after I feel better?
A sudden increase in physical or mental effort can exceed your current energy tolerance, causing symptoms to flare later. Pacing can help you find a steadier level.
When should persistent fatigue be checked?
Arrange a review when it is not gradually easing, disrupts daily activities, or comes with symptoms such as fever, unusual bleeding, swelling or urinary changes.
Can COVID-19 cause longer-lasting symptoms?
Some people have symptoms that continue after the initial infection. A clinician can assess the pattern and check for other possible causes.
