How long does fasciotomy take to work for compartment syndrome?

Compartment syndrome raises pressure inside a muscle compartment and can threaten nerves, muscles and blood flow. A fasciotomy opens the restrictive covering so pressure can reduce and tissue can be assessed. This is an emergency treatment when acute compartment syndrome is suspected; the operation does not instantly restore every affected nerve or muscle. The later course depends on how long pressure was present, the injury, swelling and whether further wound procedures are needed.

Follow the surgical team’s instructions about elevation, weight bearing, dressings and movement. Keep the wound protected and attend every review, because swelling may mean the wound needs staged closure. Begin physiotherapy only when the team confirms it is appropriate; exercises may focus on joint movement, muscle activation and a gradual return to walking. Do not smoke, soak the wound or change dressings in an unapproved way. Use pain medicine as directed and report side effects.

Contact the surgical team urgently for rapidly increasing pain, a tight or expanding dressing, new numbness, weakness, pale or cold fingers or toes, or difficulty moving them. Fever, spreading redness, pus, wound separation or feeling suddenly very unwell can signal a wound problem. New severe symptoms after discharge should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask which tissues were affected, when the wound can be closed, how much weight you may put through the limb, and which changes should trigger an immediate call. Ask how rehabilitation will be adapted if nerve or muscle weakness remains.
