How Long Does Exercise Therapy Take to Work for Groin Strain?

Short answer

A mild groin strain may begin responding over several weeks, but returning to cutting, sprinting or sport can take longer and depends on strength and pain-free control.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Early goal
Restore comfortable movement and gentle activation.
Return marker
Strength and controlled sport movements matter more than the calendar alone.

Why the groin needs staged loading

A groin strain affects muscles and tendons on the inner thigh, often after a sudden change of direction, forceful stretch or rapid increase in training. Early exercises may restore comfortable range of motion and gentle muscle activation. Later work usually challenges the adductors with strengthening, balance and sport-specific movement. Less pain at rest is encouraging, but it does not by itself show that the tissue is ready for sprinting or a hard kick. The severity of the strain and the demands of your activity influence the timetable.

Progress safely

Follow a staged plan from your physiotherapist. Keep early movements controlled, then add resistance, faster movement and changes of direction one at a time. Compare how the groin feels during activity and the following day. Avoid repeatedly testing a sprint or stretch at full force while pain remains. Warm up before training, and tell your clinician about previous groin injuries, hip symptoms or changes in your workload because these details can alter the plan. A gradual return is easier to judge when you can perform the required movement with steady control.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain is not settling, bruising or swelling is increasing, or walking remains difficult. Seek prompt care after a sudden pop with major weakness, inability to bear weight, a visible bulge, or severe pain in the groin or hip. Groin pain with abdominal symptoms or testicular pain also needs timely medical assessment.

Questions to ask

Ask which grade of strain is suspected, what exercise stage you should be doing now, and which tests show readiness for running or sport. Ask how to modify work, stairs and training while the muscle rebuilds.

Questions people ask

Can I stretch a groin strain?

Gentle range-of-motion work may be included, but forceful stretching can aggravate a healing strain; use the amount recommended for your stage.

When can I run again?

Running is usually reintroduced after walking, strengthening and faster drills are comfortable and controlled, with progression guided by symptoms.
