How Long Does Exercise Therapy Take to Work for Flat Feet?

Short answer

With regular practice, exercise therapy for flat feet may improve comfort and control over several weeks, while strength and walking tolerance can take longer to build.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What improvement can look like

Flat feet describe a lowered or less visible arch; some people have no symptoms, while others develop aching in the feet, ankles or lower legs during standing and walking. Exercises may target the calf, foot muscles, ankle control and the way the leg accepts weight. The arch may not visibly change, yet balance, endurance and comfort can improve. Shoes, activity demands, body weight, joint flexibility and whether one or both feet are involved can all affect the pace.

Build strength without overloading the foot

Have a physiotherapist check your walking pattern and choose exercises that fit your current tolerance. Practise consistently, beginning with controlled movements and progressing only when the foot settles after activity. Supportive footwear may make exercise more comfortable, but it does not replace assessment when pain persists. Note where discomfort occurs, how long you can stand or walk, and whether the next day is better or worse. This information helps distinguish useful training from an overload that needs adjustment.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment for persistent pain, repeated ankle rolling, increasing swelling, or symptoms that affect normal walking. Seek prompt care after an injury if you cannot bear weight, the foot looks deformed, or numbness and marked weakness appear. A new one-sided change or rapidly worsening pain deserves review rather than self-directed strengthening.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether your symptoms come from the foot, ankle, calf or another joint, which exercises match your arch control, and whether footwear or an orthotic assessment would help. Ask how to progress walking and what soreness should lead you to stop.

Questions people ask

Can exercises permanently raise my arch?

Exercises may improve muscle control and comfort, but their effect on arch shape varies; the goal is often better function rather than a visible change.

Should I stop walking while starting therapy?

Usually the activity is adjusted to a tolerable level, unless an injury or clinician advises otherwise.
