How long does an epidural steroid injection take to work for sciatica?

Sciatica describes pain or altered sensation travelling along the sciatic nerve, often from irritation in the lower back. The injection delivers medicine near the inflamed nerve. A quick change may come from the local anaesthetic, so it does not always predict the longer response. Relief may be partial, delayed, or absent if another problem is driving the symptoms.

Notice more than pain alone. Changes in sitting, standing, walking, sleep, pins and needles, and leg strength help your clinician decide whether the nerve is settling. A short period of injection-site soreness can be expected, but severe or unfamiliar symptoms deserve advice.

Keep the first day uncomplicated and follow the specific instructions from your clinic. If your leg is numb or weak, avoid driving and tasks where reduced sensation could cause an injury. Once safe, gentle movement and the prescribed rehabilitation routine can help you test function without provoking a flare. Do not increase exercise simply because pain is briefly reduced.

Write down when relief starts, how long it lasts, and which activities remain difficult. Contact your clinician if the agreed follow-up date passes without meaningful improvement, or if symptoms are returning and limiting normal activity.

Get urgent help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle area, progressive leg weakness, inability to walk safely, fever, or worsening swelling, redness, or discharge at the injection site. A severe headache after the procedure, especially when upright, also needs prompt medical advice.

Ask what improvement would count as a useful response, how long to wait before review, which exercises are appropriate, and who to contact if numbness, weakness, or pain changes suddenly.
