How long does an ECG take to work for heart failure?

An ECG can identify an irregular rhythm, previous heart muscle injury, or electrical patterns that support a wider assessment. It cannot measure pumping strength on its own. Clinicians may combine it with an examination, blood tests, a chest image, and an echocardiogram to assess the heart's structure and function.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and tell the clinician about medicines, implanted devices, and recent symptoms. Keep still while the sensors record. Bring details about breathlessness, ankle swelling, reduced exercise tolerance, nighttime symptoms, and any recent weight change so the assessment reflects the whole picture.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, or coughing up frothy or blood-stained fluid. These symptoms need immediate assessment and should not wait for a routine ECG.

Ask what the ECG suggests, whether an echocardiogram or other tests are needed, and which symptoms mean your care plan should change. Clarify how and when you will receive results and what to do if breathlessness worsens.
