How long does an ECG take to work for atrial fibrillation?

Small sticky sensors on the chest and limbs detect electrical signals and produce a tracing. A clinician can often inspect this tracing promptly for an irregular rhythm and other changes. A normal short recording does not rule out atrial fibrillation if episodes come and go; a portable monitor may be suggested to capture a longer period.

Stay still and breathe normally while the sensors are attached, because movement can affect the tracing. Tell the clinician when palpitations began, how long they last, and whether dizziness, breathlessness, or chest discomfort accompanies them. Do not stop or change heart medicines based on an ECG result without medical advice.

Seek emergency help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness on one side, trouble speaking, or a fast or irregular heartbeat with severe dizziness. These symptoms need urgent assessment regardless of whether an earlier ECG was normal.
