How long does diabetes medication management take to work for type 2 diabetes?

Different medicines work in different ways: some help the body use insulin more effectively, some affect glucose released by the liver, and some increase glucose removal or loss through urine. The choice depends on your health, kidney function, other medicines and treatment goals. A single reading is not enough to decide whether a medicine is suitable. Your clinician may allow time for the pattern to become clear before changing the plan.

Take each medicine as directed and follow instructions about meals or timing. Record readings, symptoms, missed doses and changes in food or activity. Do not double a dose after forgetting one unless your instructions specifically say to do so. Report troublesome effects early, because a different dose or medicine may be considered. Attend planned checks so treatment can be reviewed safely.

Seek urgent help for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting or inability to keep fluids down. Contact your clinician promptly for repeated low readings, very high readings with worsening thirst or urination, or a new medicine reaction.
