How long does colposcopy take to work for HPV infection?

Colposcopy is a closer examination of the cervix, often recommended after HPV is detected or cervical cells look changed. Magnification and special solutions can help the clinician identify areas that need closer assessment. A biopsy may be taken, but the examination is not a treatment for HPV and cannot show exactly when the infection began.

HPV can be present without symptoms. A positive HPV result can lead to colposcopy without meaning that cancer is present. The examination and any tissue result are interpreted alongside your screening history and other findings.

Attend the appointment and tell the clinician about pregnancy possibility, bleeding, pain, medicines and previous results. If a biopsy is taken, follow the aftercare instructions and ask when the report should arrive. Keep follow-up even when you feel well, because HPV-related cervical changes may not cause noticeable symptoms.

Contact the clinic for bleeding that is heavier than expected, worsening pelvic pain, unusual-smelling discharge or fever after colposcopy. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting or a sudden feeling of being seriously unwell.
