How long does colposcopy take to work for cervical dysplasia?

A colposcopy uses a magnifying instrument to examine the cervix after an abnormal screening result or another concern. The clinician may apply solutions that make unusual areas easier to see and may take a small biopsy. The visual examination can guide decisions, but tissue analysis is needed when a biopsy is taken.

Cervical dysplasia describes changed cells on the cervix. It is not the same as invasive cancer. The grade and extent of any cell change, along with your history, determine whether monitoring or treatment is discussed.

Follow the preparation instructions, tell the clinic if you may be pregnant, and ask whether you should change any medicines. Afterward, use pads if there is spotting and follow advice about intercourse, tampons and bathing, particularly if a biopsy was taken. Keep the result appointment so the findings and next step are clear.

Contact the clinic if bleeding is heavier than expected, discharge smells unusual, pain is increasing or you develop fever. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting or feeling acutely unwell after the examination.
