A colposcope stays outside the body while the clinician uses magnification and solutions to look for abnormal areas on the cervix. A biopsy may be taken if an area needs closer examination. The visual impression can be discussed on the day, but tissue analysis is needed to identify the type and severity of cell change. Colposcopy is an assessment procedure, not a treatment that instantly removes cervical cancer. If cancer is confirmed, further tests may be arranged to understand its extent and choose treatment.

Tell the clinic if you may be pregnant, have unusual bleeding, or take medicines that affect clotting. Bring a pad because light bleeding or discharge can follow a biopsy. Follow advice about intercourse, tampons, and strenuous activity until the cervix has settled. Keep your results appointment and ask how you will receive the report if no visit is booked.
