How long does chronic disease review take to work for asthma?

A review is a planning appointment, not emergency treatment. If a preventer is changed, its effect is assessed over time rather than judged after one dose. Poor technique or missed doses can make a medicine seem ineffective, so demonstrating how you use the inhaler is useful.

Get emergency help if breathing is rapidly worsening, you cannot speak comfortably because of breathlessness, your lips look blue or grey, you become exhausted or confused, or your reliever is not helping as directed. Do not wait for a routine review during a severe attack.

Ask what improvement should look like, when the plan will be reviewed, which symptoms require urgent help, and how to use each inhaler with or without a spacer. Mention work, exercise, sleep, and allergy triggers.
