How long does chemotherapy take to work for throat cancer?

The team may look for changes in the tumour using examination, a camera examination of the throat, scans and symptoms. Pain, hoarseness, swallowing difficulty or a neck swelling can improve at different speeds, and a symptom change does not by itself prove that cancer has responded. Chemotherapy may be combined with radiotherapy or used before another treatment, so the meaning of a scan depends on the whole plan.

Report trouble swallowing, mouth soreness, dry mouth, nausea, altered taste and weight loss early. A dietitian or speech and swallowing specialist may help you maintain nutrition and protect swallowing function. Take prescribed medicines as directed and keep every blood test and review. Ask whether you should avoid particular foods or activities while your blood counts are low.

Contact the treatment team urgently for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow liquids, choking, heavy bleeding, fever, confusion or repeated vomiting. These symptoms can require same-day assessment. Follow the emergency number supplied by your oncology unit, especially outside normal clinic hours.

Ask when your response will be checked, which test will be used, and how chemotherapy fits with radiotherapy or surgery. Ask what swallowing or nutrition changes should trigger a call, how side effects can be treated, and what the next option would be if the response is insufficient.
