How long does chemotherapy take to work for pancreatic cancer?

Some people receive chemotherapy to shrink or control a tumour before an operation; others receive it after surgery or when an operation is not suitable. The team may monitor pain, jaundice, appetite, digestion, weight, strength and daily activity, while scans show changes in the pancreas and nearby or distant areas. Blood tests also help check liver function and whether treatment can be given safely. These measures together are more informative than how you feel on one day.

Attend pre-treatment blood tests and tell the team about fever, diarrhoea, constipation, poor intake, pain or new jaundice. Take prescribed anti-sickness and other supportive medicines as directed. Keep notes about food tolerance, bowel changes and energy, and ask for dietetic support if eating becomes difficult. Confirm when the next scan is expected and what result would lead to surgery, continued treatment or a different approach.

Seek prompt advice for fever or chills, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, severe or rapidly increasing abdominal pain, yellowing that is worsening, dark urine with pale stools, or unusual bleeding. These can require timely assessment during chemotherapy. Call emergency services for collapse, severe breathing difficulty or sudden chest pain.
