How long does chemotherapy take to work for metastatic cancer?

Metastatic cancer has spread from its original site, and different cancer cells can respond differently to the same medicine. Your oncologist may use chemotherapy to shrink tumours, slow growth, ease symptoms, or help control disease. A scan may not show the full effect immediately, and symptoms can change before imaging gives a clear answer. Treatment is often given in cycles, with rest periods that allow your body to recover. The schedule and assessment point depend on the cancer type, where it has spread, the medicines used, and your general health.

Attend each appointment and tell the oncology team about new symptoms, changes in pain, appetite, breathing, bowel habits, or energy. Keep a record of treatment days and medicines, including supportive medicines. Do not stop or delay chemotherapy because you feel well or because side effects are difficult; contact the team so they can assess you and adjust support safely. Ask when your first response review is planned and what signs would suggest that the plan needs changing.

Contact your team promptly for fever or chills, shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, new bleeding, or sudden worsening pain. These symptoms can need assessment during chemotherapy regardless of whether the cancer appears to be responding. Use the urgent-care instructions provided by your oncology service if you cannot reach the team.
