Short answer

Chemotherapy may begin affecting HER2-positive breast cancer during early cycles, but the response is judged through the planned treatment schedule and tests rather than symptoms alone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Clinical examination and appropriate imaging guide assessment.

Chemotherapy may be combined with HER2-directed treatment.

How response is assessed

The timing varies with the purpose of treatment. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to reduce a tumour, after surgery to lower the chance of remaining cancer cells, or with HER2-directed treatment. These plans use different checkpoints.

Your team may assess the breast and nearby lymph nodes by examination and imaging. If surgery follows treatment, the tissue removed can provide important information about the amount of cancer left. A smaller lump or less discomfort can be encouraging, but it cannot replace the planned assessment.

What to do during the course

Attend blood tests and treatment visits, take supportive medicines as directed, and report changes in the breast, skin, appetite, or energy. Keep a short record of symptoms and questions for each visit.

Do not stop chemotherapy or HER2-directed treatment because you feel better or because side effects are difficult. Tell the team early; they can review supportive care and decide whether the schedule needs adjustment.

When to seek care

Call the oncology team urgently for fever, chills, unexpected bleeding, severe diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, or signs of an allergic reaction during or after treatment. Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or swelling of the face or throat.

Questions for your doctor

Ask when response will be checked, whether surgery is part of the plan, how HER2-directed treatment fits with chemotherapy, and what the next option would be if the response is smaller than expected.

Questions people ask

Does a change in the breast show that treatment is working?

It may be useful to report, but examination and planned tests are needed to assess response.

Should I continue if I feel well?

Yes, follow the prescribed schedule unless your oncology team changes it.
