Cancer of unknown primary means that cancer has been found but its original site has not been identified. The oncology team uses biopsy findings, scans, blood tests, and changes in symptoms to choose a regimen and judge its effect. Some changes can be seen on examination or in symptoms before a scan, while other responses are clearer only when imaging is repeated after a planned part of treatment. A stable scan can also be meaningful if the disease has stopped growing. Treatment may be adjusted if the cancer does not respond as hoped or if side effects make a different approach safer.

Keep a record of new symptoms, appetite, weight changes, pain, and energy, and take medicines as prescribed. Attend blood tests and scans even when you feel well, because symptoms alone cannot show how tumours are changing. Ask when the first response review is planned, which result will be checked, and whether the aim is to shrink the cancer, control it, or relieve a particular symptom. Bring a current list of medicines and supplements to each visit.

Contact your treatment team promptly for a fever, shaking chills, new shortness of breath, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, confusion, unusual bleeding, or pain that is rapidly worsening. Do not wait for the next appointment if you cannot keep fluids down or feel suddenly very unwell. The team can tell you which number to use outside clinic hours.
