How long does chemotherapy take to work for brain tumour?

The plan depends on the tumour type, its position, whether surgery or radiotherapy is also being used, the medicine chosen, and your general health. Some treatments are given in repeating cycles; others follow a daily or longer-term schedule set by the neuro-oncology team.

MRI or another scan may be compared with earlier images. Clinicians also check headaches, seizures, vision, speech, strength, balance, thinking, and alertness. Symptoms can change because of the tumour, swelling, seizures, or treatment, so they need careful interpretation rather than a quick conclusion.

Take medicines on schedule and keep a simple record of headaches, seizures, vomiting, vision changes, weakness, balance, and concentration. Tell the team about any new or worsening neurological symptom, even if it settles. Do not drive or stop an anti-seizure medicine unless your clinician gives specific advice.

Treatment side effects do not show whether chemotherapy is working. Ask when imaging is planned, what changes may be expected, and who should receive an urgent call if symptoms appear between appointments.

Call emergency services for a seizure that does not stop, repeated seizures without recovery, sudden weakness, difficulty speaking, severe confusion, loss of consciousness, or a severe rapidly worsening headache with vomiting. Contact the oncology team urgently for fever or breathing difficulty during chemotherapy.

Ask which scan will assess response, when it is expected, how swelling can affect interpretation, and how chemotherapy fits with surgery or radiotherapy. Clarify seizure precautions, steroid instructions if prescribed, and the exact symptoms that require emergency help.
