How long does chemotherapy take to work for acute myeloid leukaemia?

Initial treatment aims to reduce abnormal myeloid cells and restore healthier blood production. The team follows blood counts and may repeat a bone marrow examination after treatment to assess whether leukaemia cells remain. A response can involve several findings rather than one change in how you feel.

If the first phase does not produce the expected response, the team may adjust medicines or discuss another treatment approach. If it does, additional treatment may still be recommended to reduce the chance of the leukaemia returning. Your age, overall health, leukaemia features, and treatment goal all influence the schedule.

Attend blood tests and review appointments even when side effects are mild. Keep your oncology team updated about temperature, medicines, dental problems, and any infection exposure. Ask how to manage nausea, mouth soreness, fatigue, and low blood counts before they interfere with eating or drinking.

Contact the team urgently for fever, chills, breathlessness, uncontrolled bleeding, a new severe headache, confusion, or marked weakness.
