How long does cervical cerclage take to work for cervical insufficiency?

Cervical insufficiency means the cervix may shorten or open before labour without strong contractions. A cerclage is a strong stitch placed around the cervix to support it. The stitch does not reverse every change that has already occurred, and it cannot treat infection, ruptured membranes or established labour.

Mild cramping, pressure or a small amount of spotting can occur after the procedure. Your clinician will explain activity, medication and follow-up instructions, which may include an examination or ultrasound.

Arrange the recommended rest and transport after the procedure, take prescribed medicines, and keep follow-up visits. Ask when intercourse, bathing, exercise and work can resume because advice depends on your symptoms and the stitch type. Do not pull or check the stitch yourself.

Contact your maternity unit urgently for regular tightening, increasing pelvic pressure, leaking fluid, heavy bleeding, fever, foul-smelling discharge or severe pain. Reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy also needs prompt assessment. The stitch may need review if labour or waters breaking begins.
