How long does breast ultrasound take to work for duct ectasia?

Duct ectasia means that a milk duct beneath the nipple has become widened and may contain thicker fluid. Ultrasound can show ducts and nearby tissue, helping the clinician assess whether a symptom has features that fit this condition or needs another explanation. It cannot narrow a duct, clear discharge, or settle inflammation during the scan. A report may be available after the images are reviewed, and the clinician may combine it with your history and breast examination.

Tell the imaging team which breast is affected and describe the colour and pattern of any nipple discharge. Mention pain, a lump, recent pregnancy or breastfeeding, and any previous breast procedures. Avoid repeatedly squeezing the nipple, because this can maintain discharge and irritate the area. Follow the review plan you are given. Depending on the findings, your clinician may recommend observation, treatment for inflammation, or additional assessment.

Seek prompt care for bloody or clear discharge from one breast, a new persistent lump, nipple inversion, skin dimpling, redness, warmth, fever, or worsening pain. Get urgent help if you feel very unwell or the breast changes quickly. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, but they should be assessed without relying on an ultrasound appointment alone.
