How long does breast reconstruction take to work for breast cancer?

Reconstruction may use an implant, your own tissue, or a staged combination of procedures. Before surgery, ask how drains are managed, when normal activities can resume, and whether radiotherapy or other cancer treatment may alter the reconstruction plan.

Contact your surgical team for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, wound separation, fever, or pain that is worsening rather than easing. Seek urgent help for sudden chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or one-sided leg swelling. A breast that rapidly changes colour or becomes unusually tense also needs prompt assessment.
