How long does brachytherapy take to work for eye melanoma?

Short answer
Brachytherapy delivers a focused radiation dose to eye melanoma, while tumour response and vision are assessed during scheduled eye follow-up.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Response review
- Eye examination and imaging over time
- Main follow-up focus
- Tumour control and vision
What the timing means
The radiation is aimed at the melanoma while limiting exposure to surrounding tissue as far as possible. The treated area may continue changing after radiation, and vision symptoms do not reliably measure tumour response. An ocular oncology team may examine the eye and use imaging over time.
What to do
Protect the eye as instructed, use prescribed drops, and attend oncology and eye reviews. Report changes in vision, increasing redness, pain, flashes, or new floaters. Do not drive until your team says vision and medication effects make it appropriate.
When to seek care
Seek urgent advice for sudden loss of vision, severe eye pain, marked swelling, or new neurological symptoms. Contact the team promptly if redness or discharge is worsening.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how the tumour and vision will be monitored, when the first review occurs, which drops are needed, and which changes require same-day contact.
Questions people ask
Will vision changes happen immediately?
Vision changes vary, and the eye team should assess any new or worsening change.
Can I judge response from pain or redness?
No. Local symptoms do not reliably show whether the melanoma has responded.
