How long does a bone density scan take to work for premature ovarian insufficiency?

Premature ovarian insufficiency can be associated with lower oestrogen levels, which may affect bone health. The scan uses low-dose imaging to estimate bone mineral density at commonly assessed areas such as the hip and lower spine. You lie still while the scanner passes over the body region being measured. The appointment itself is not a treatment, so there is no waiting period for the scan to “work.” A clinician reviews the images and measurements, then explains whether your bone density needs monitoring, lifestyle support, or treatment.

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the imaging centre’s instructions about supplements or metal fasteners. Tell the team if you could be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or cannot lie flat comfortably. Ask when and how the report will be shared. Keep the result with your other POI records so future scans can be compared consistently. A follow-up plan may consider hormone treatment, calcium and vitamin D intake, weight-bearing activity, and other factors affecting bone health; these choices should be individualised.

Contact your clinician if you have new or worsening back or hip pain, a suspected fracture after a minor injury, or difficulty taking a recommended treatment. Seek urgent care after a significant fall if you cannot bear weight, have severe pain, or notice a visible change in the shape of a limb. These symptoms need assessment regardless of when your scan report is due.
