The scan uses low-dose imaging to estimate bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and spine. It does not repair weak bone or make symptoms disappear. Your clinician interprets the report with your age, fracture history, medicines, health conditions, and risk of falling. A result may support starting, changing, or continuing a bone-health plan. Changes in bone density are assessed over time, so repeating the scan too soon may not add useful information.

Ask the imaging centre whether you should pause a calcium-containing supplement before the appointment and tell staff if pregnancy is possible. Wear clothing without troublesome metal when advised. Bring details of previous scans so they can be compared when appropriate. Discuss the report with your clinician rather than judging treatment from the scan alone; strength training, fall prevention, nutrition, and prescribed medicine may all matter.

A scan is usually arranged routinely, but seek prompt assessment after a fall with new severe back, hip, or wrist pain, loss of height, or difficulty standing. Urgent care is needed for sudden leg weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These concerns need clinical assessment even if a scan is already scheduled.
