How long does a blood test take to work for sickle cell disease?

Testing examines haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells, and can identify a pattern consistent with sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait. A screening result may need a second method or a repeat sample before the clinician can explain it confidently. Recent transfusion, age, and the reason for testing can affect which tests are appropriate.

Confirm how the result will be shared and whether you need a follow-up appointment. Tell the testing team about any recent transfusion and bring family or prior test information if available. Continue prescribed treatment and usual hydration advice; do not change medicines based on an unconfirmed screening result.

Do not wait for routine results if you develop severe or worsening pain, fever, difficulty breathing, unusual sleepiness, sudden weakness, or signs of dehydration. These symptoms can require prompt assessment in someone with sickle cell disease or another serious illness.
