Blood tests may look for contributors such as diabetes, vitamin deficiency, thyroid problems, kidney or liver disease, inflammation, or abnormal blood proteins. They do not directly show every change in the nerves. A clinician may combine results with the pattern of numbness, tingling, burning pain, weakness, balance problems and examination findings. If the cause remains uncertain, nerve conduction testing, imaging or other specialist assessment may be discussed.

Check when the requesting clinic expects to release results and attend follow-up even if the blood test is normal. Write down when symptoms began, which areas are affected, and whether they are changing. Protect numb feet and hands from heat, cuts and pressure because reduced sensation can hide an injury. Take prescribed medicines as directed and mention supplements, alcohol use and any new treatment.

Seek urgent help for sudden weakness, rapidly spreading numbness, trouble walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, new facial drooping, speech difficulty or severe back pain.
