Blood testing may measure urate and check for other clues, depending on what your clinician is investigating. A urate result can be difficult to interpret during a flare because it may not reflect the usual level. The result is considered alongside the pattern of pain, swelling, examination findings, medical history, and sometimes testing of joint fluid. A blood test therefore supports assessment rather than proving the diagnosis by itself.
