How long does a blood test take to work for chronic kidney disease?

Blood tests commonly assess creatinine and estimate how well the kidneys filter blood. A result can be affected by hydration, medicines, muscle size, and acute illness. One abnormal reading may show a temporary change rather than chronic kidney disease, so clinicians may compare it with previous results and arrange repeat testing. Urine testing and blood pressure checks can add important information.

Confirm when your report will be available and whether you need to continue regular medicines before testing. Do not stop prescribed treatment or take extra painkillers without advice. Tell the clinician about vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced urination, swelling, diabetes, high blood pressure, and over-the-counter or herbal medicines.

Seek urgent care for very little or no urine, severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or rapidly increasing swelling. Contact your clinician promptly if vomiting prevents fluids, weakness is worsening, or you are told the kidney result has changed markedly.

Ask which kidney markers were measured, whether the result needs repeating, how medicines and hydration affect it, and whether urine testing or blood pressure review is also needed.
