How long does blood pressure medication take to work for hypertension?

Hypertension often causes no noticeable symptoms, so you may not feel a change when the medicine is working. A reading can vary with timing, stress, activity and technique. Your clinician may review home readings and adjust one medicine, add another or investigate side effects before deciding that control is adequate.

Take the medicine consistently and measure your blood pressure as instructed, using the same arm and a rested position when possible. Write down readings and symptoms rather than reacting to one result. Do not stop treatment because a reading improves. Report dizziness, faintness, swelling, troublesome cough or other new effects.

Seek emergency care for a very high reading accompanied by chest pain, severe breathlessness, weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, confusion, a sudden severe headache or vision loss. Without those symptoms, contact your clinician promptly about repeated high readings or troublesome medicine effects.
