How long does autologous stem cell transplant take to work for multiple myeloma?

Before the transplant, medicines are used to reduce the myeloma burden and collect your own blood-forming stem cells. A high-dose medicine is then given to target remaining myeloma cells. The stored stem cells are returned through a vein; they do not attack myeloma directly, but help the marrow make new blood cells.

The early period is mainly about engraftment and recovery from intensive treatment. Blood counts can remain low, and tiredness, nausea, appetite changes, mouth soreness, or infection risk may occur. The transplant team follows blood tests and your symptoms to judge recovery. The effect on myeloma is assessed over time with examinations and disease tests, rather than by how you feel on one particular day.

Keep every transplant-team appointment and take medicines exactly as prescribed. Follow guidance about hand hygiene, food safety, visitors, activity, and avoiding infection exposure. Record temperature readings if the team asks you to, and report new symptoms promptly. Arrange help with transport, meals, medicines, and daily tasks because energy can be limited during early recovery.

Ask when you may return to work, exercise, crowded places, or travel. Do not change supplements or treatment without checking first, since some products can interfere with care or irritate the mouth and stomach.

Contact your transplant team urgently for a fever or chills, difficulty breathing, chest pain, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, new confusion, bleeding, or an inability to drink. Call promptly for a new rash, worsening mouth sores, painful urination, or a sudden change in weakness. Use the temperature threshold and after-hours number supplied by your team, because instructions can differ during transplant recovery.
