How long does antiviral treatment take to work for shingles?

Shingles, or herpes zoster, affects a nerve and the skin supplied by it. Burning, tingling, or pain may come before grouped blisters. Antivirals limit viral multiplication and work best when started promptly after symptoms begin. They may reduce the development of new blisters and support faster settling, but they do not switch off nerve inflammation immediately. Blisters usually dry and crust gradually, and nerve pain can outlast the visible rash.

Take the prescribed medicine on schedule and ask about safe pain relief if discomfort is interfering with sleep. Keep blisters clean and covered with loose clothing; avoid scratching. Until lesions crust and heal, avoid direct contact with pregnant people who are not immune to chickenpox, newborns, and people with weakened immunity. Seek urgent assessment for a rash near the eye or nose, eye pain, vision changes, facial weakness, severe headache, confusion, weakness in an arm or leg, or rapidly worsening pain.
