How long does anticoagulation management take to work for pulmonary embolism?

Anticoagulants reduce the blood clot’s ability to grow and help prevent new clots while your body gradually breaks down the existing clot. Breathlessness, chest discomfort and tiredness can improve at different speeds. The medicine does not dissolve the clot instantly, and feeling better does not mean the treatment can be stopped.

Take each dose exactly as prescribed and do not double a missed dose without instructions. Tell your clinician about other medicines, supplements, bleeding problems, planned procedures and pregnancy. Keep scheduled blood tests or reviews when requested; the checks depend on the anticoagulant used. Ask what to do if you vomit, miss a dose or notice unusual bruising.

Call emergency services for sudden or worsening breathlessness, severe chest pain, fainting, coughing blood or new confusion. Seek prompt medical advice for heavy or persistent bleeding, black stools, blood in urine, a severe headache after a fall, or rapidly increasing bruising.

Ask which improvement should come first, how long your prescribed course is expected to last, whether you need monitoring, and which activities or medicines could increase bleeding risk.
