How long does antibiotic treatment take to work for Helicobacter pylori infection?

H. pylori treatment commonly combines antibiotics with medicine that reduces stomach acid. Feeling better does not prove that the bacteria have gone, because acid suppression can calm pain while infection remains. Nausea, altered taste, loose stools, or mild stomach upset can occur during treatment. The ulcer or irritated stomach lining may need additional time to heal after the bacteria are treated.

Take every dose at the prescribed times and finish the course unless the prescriber changes it. Missing doses can make treatment less effective. Ask before using antacids, supplements, or other medicines because they may affect how tablets are taken. Arrange the follow-up breath or stool test recommended by your clinician; testing too soon or while taking acid-suppressing medicine can give an unreliable result.

Contact your clinician if symptoms are worsening, do not begin to settle after treatment, or side effects make it difficult to keep medicines down.
