How long does allergy testing take to work for pet allergy?

Skin-prick testing is read after a short waiting period at the clinic. Blood testing does not give an immediate visible reaction; the laboratory processes the sample and the clinician discusses the report when available. Neither result, by itself, proves that contact with a cat or dog causes every symptom. The result is matched with timing, exposure, examination findings and other possible triggers.

A positive sensitisation result means the immune system recognises an allergen. It does not predict how severe a future reaction will be. A negative result may make a particular trigger less likely, but persistent symptoms can still have another explanation, such as dust, mould or irritant exposure.

Follow the clinic's preparation instructions, including advice about medicines that could affect skin testing. Record when symptoms begin, which animal or environment was involved, and whether you had sneezing, itchy eyes, wheezing or skin symptoms.
