How long does abdominal ultrasound take to work for inguinal hernia?

The sonographer uses a handheld probe over the abdomen and groin to create moving images. The examination may be done while you stand, cough or gently strain, because a small hernia can be easier to see when pressure changes. Ultrasound may show a bulge or tissue moving through a weak area, but the result can be limited by the hernia's position, body build or bowel gas. A clinician combines the report with your symptoms and physical examination.

Follow the appointment instructions about eating, drinking and clothing. Tell the imaging team where you feel the bulge and whether it changes when you lie down. Afterward, you can normally return to usual activities unless your clinician advises otherwise. A scan result is not the same as treatment: management may involve observation, activity advice or surgical assessment, depending on symptoms and examination findings.

Seek urgent medical help if a groin lump becomes very painful, firm, discoloured or impossible to push back gently, or if pain comes with vomiting, marked abdominal swelling or inability to pass stool or gas.
