How is unexplained fever treated?

A clinician may ask when the fever began, whether it comes and goes, recent travel, contact with illness, medicines, and symptoms such as cough, pain, rash or urinary changes. Examination and tests can help look for infection, inflammation, a medicine reaction or a blood-related condition. Treatment might include fluids, rest and a fever-lowering medicine when appropriate, but antibiotics are used only when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed. If a blood disorder or cancer is found, care is directed at that condition. Fever during cancer treatment can require a different, faster pathway because a low white-cell count can reduce the body's ability to fight infection.

Record your temperature and the time it was taken, plus any chills, new symptoms and medicines used. Drink fluids if you can, wear light clothing and follow the dosing instructions for any recommended fever medicine. Do not start leftover antibiotics or combine cold remedies without checking their ingredients. Tell the clinician about chemotherapy, steroids, immune-suppressing treatment, implanted devices and recent procedures. These details can change which tests and treatments are safest.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever with confusion, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, a stiff neck, a new widespread rash, persistent vomiting, dehydration or severe pain. If you are receiving cancer treatment or have been told your neutrophil count is low, contact your oncology team immediately for a fever or chills; febrile neutropenia can worsen quickly and may need hospital assessment.

Ask which causes are being checked, which results are available, whether a medicine could be contributing, what temperature or symptom should trigger a call, and whether you should change any planned cancer treatment.
