How is runny nose treated?

Clear drainage with sneezing or itchy eyes can fit allergic rhinitis, while a sore throat and cough may accompany a common cold. Facial pressure, reduced smell or thick drainage can occur with sinusitis. Runny nose can also occur with influenza or COVID-19, especially when other viral symptoms are present. A house dust mite allergy is one possible ongoing trigger.

Drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration, gently blow your nose, and use a saline spray or rinse according to its instructions. Avoid smoke, strong scents and any known personal triggers. Allergy medication may help when symptoms follow exposure to pollen, dust or animals; ask a pharmacist or clinician which option fits your age, pregnancy status and other medicines. Do not start antibiotics without an assessment, because many short-lived cases are viral.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are severe, keep returning, interfere with sleep, or do not begin to settle. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or face, confusion, severe headache, a stiff neck, or signs of dehydration. A clinician can examine you and decide whether the pattern fits an allergy, sinusitis or another infection.

Ask what is most likely triggering the drainage, whether an allergy medicine or saline treatment is suitable, and which symptoms should prompt a review. Mention how long it has lasted, its colour and consistency, associated fever or facial pain, and any new medicines or exposures.
