How Is Nail Discoloration Treated?

A yellow, white, green, brown, or dark nail can reflect different processes. Fungal infection may thicken or weaken the nail, while moisture and bacterial growth can contribute to a green shade. Injury can leave blood beneath the nail, and psoriasis may cause pits, lifting, or uneven colour. A dark streak needs a clinician’s assessment, especially when it affects one nail or changes over time.

Fungal disease may be managed with a topical antifungal or an oral antifungal treatment; the choice depends on the nail and your health. Bacterial changes call for keeping the nail dry and treating the infection when indicated. Trauma is often managed with protection while the nail grows out. Avoid picking, harsh chemicals, and sharing nail tools.

Arrange a dermatology review for a new or unexplained colour change, a dark band, pain, swelling, drainage, bleeding, or a nail that is lifting. Seek prompt care if redness spreads around the nail or you feel unwell. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, or a weakened immune system should have nail changes assessed rather than self-treating.
