How is lichen sclerosus treated?

A clinician may prescribe a strong steroid ointment for the affected vulval skin, with instructions that change as the inflammation settles. The medicine reduces itching, soreness and active inflammation; it does not simply mask the condition. Treatment often needs a planned maintenance routine because lichen sclerosus can return when treatment stops.

Wash with lukewarm water or a gentle unperfumed cleanser, pat dry and avoid fragranced products, harsh soaps and rubbing. A plain emollient can help protect irritated skin. Lichen sclerosus can cause pain during sex, vulval pain or pale skin changes, so these symptoms deserve assessment rather than self-treatment.

Arrange an examination with a gynaecologist or dermatologist if you have persistent itching, white patches or changing vulval skin. Use the prescribed ointment exactly as directed and ask where to apply it. Do not use leftover steroid, thrush treatment or herbal products without checking first, because they may irritate the skin or obscure the examination.

Keep follow-up appointments even when symptoms improve. Your clinician may check the skin for healing, scarring or a persistent thickened area. A small sample may be recommended when the appearance is uncertain or an area does not respond as expected.

Seek prompt medical review for a new lump, sore, bleeding area, ulcer, marked thickening or a patch that does not heal. Get urgent help for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, fever or difficulty passing urine. These changes need examination; they should not be judged by symptom frequency alone.
