How is hip pain treated?

Short answer
Hip pain is treated by identifying its cause, then using activity changes, targeted exercise, pain relief, physiotherapy and sometimes surgery.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Treatment depends on
- The source of pain and its effect on movement
- Useful focus
- Keep suitable movement while reducing aggravating load
Why the cause matters
Pain can arise from the hip joint, nearby tendons or the lower back. Hip Osteoarthritis may cause activity-related groin discomfort and stiffness; Sciatica can send pain from the back into the leg; Trochanteric Bursitis and Gluteal Tendinopathy often hurt on the outer side of the hip. Avascular Necrosis of the Hip and Hip Fracture need specific medical assessment.
A clinician may ask when pain began, examine walking and hip movement, and decide whether imaging or other tests are needed. Treatment should match the finding rather than the pain location alone.
Practical treatment steps
Reduce activities that clearly provoke pain without stopping all movement. A graded strengthening programme, physiotherapy and pacing can restore confidence and function. Medicines or injections may be considered after checking your health and other medicines. If joint damage remains disabling, Total Hip Replacement may be discussed.
When to seek care
Book an assessment for pain that persists, returns repeatedly or changes how you walk. Seek urgent help after a fall with severe pain or inability to use the leg, or when hip pain comes with fever, marked swelling, redness, numbness or new weakness.
Questions for your doctor
Where do you think the pain is coming from? Which activities are safe now? Would physiotherapy help, and what signs would mean I need imaging or specialist treatment?
