How is a hip fracture treated?

Doctors assess the fracture with an examination and imaging, then consider its location, stability, displacement and the person’s overall health. Hip fracture surgery may use screws, a plate, a nail or a replacement joint, depending on the break and the joint involved.

Hospital care also addresses pain, hydration, safe movement and medical conditions that could affect recovery. After the operation, physiotherapy focuses on transfers, walking, balance and strength. If fragile bones contributed, osteoporosis assessment and bisphosphonate therapy may be discussed to reduce future fracture risk.

Do not try to walk on a suspected fracture. Keep the person warm and still, avoid food or drink until medical advice is available, and arrange emergency transport. After treatment, use the walking aid and weight-bearing instructions provided by the team; rushing without support can increase fall risk.

Post-operative rehabilitation may continue after discharge and is tailored to pain, strength, balance, home layout and support. Tell the care team about increasing wound pain, drainage, fever, calf swelling or a sudden change in walking ability.

Call emergency services after a fall or impact when there is severe hip or groin pain, a shortened or turned-out leg, inability to bear weight, or a new inability to move the leg. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain or confusion during recovery also needs urgent medical attention.

Ask which fracture pattern is present, what operation is recommended, how much weight can be placed on the leg, what rehabilitation is needed, and whether bone-health testing is appropriate.
